Soweto from the Air
The Calabash, the 1976 uprising and the gold reef the city was built on: what is underneath a lap of FNB Stadium.
FNB Stadium is the largest in Africa at 94,000 seats, and everyone calls it the Calabash because that is what it looks like: an African cooking pot, its skin patterned in fired-clay colours with a ring of light around the base. It staged the 2010 World Cup final. Its real history is older — Nelson Mandela gave his first speech here after leaving prison in 1990, and this is where the country said goodbye to him in December 2013.
It stands on the edge of Soweto, the township that carried the 1976 uprising, and the mine dumps you can see from the air are the pale yellow spoil of the gold reef Johannesburg was built on.
